Personal Project Aims:

The aims of the Personal Project are to allow you to:

  • participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context

  • generate creative new insights and develop deeper understanding through in-depth investigation

  • demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time

  • communicate effectively in a variety of situation

  • demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning

  • appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments

Investigating

During this phase, you should think about your personal interests and then set a goal that is challenging but achievable. You also need to find out which MYP global context best fits your topic. In addition, you must consider what you already know about the topic and what you need to learn to move forward. Research is an essential part of goal-setting, identifying a global context, and determining what you need to learn.

You should  . . .

  • define a clear goal and global context for the project, based on personal interests

  • identify prior learning and subject-specific knowledge relevant to the project

  • demonstrate research skills
Planning

During this phase, you should determine the final outcome or product of your project. You must identify specific criteria that the project must meet in order to be considered a success. You must make sure that your ultimate goal is challenging, or highly challenging, but also realistic. Develop clear, measurable, specific criteria that you will use to evaluate your final product; you might write a checklist or rubric. You can only define the criteria AFTER you research the topic!

You should  . . .

  • plan and record the development of the project in your process journal

  • develop criteria for the product/outcome

  • demonstrate self- management skills

Taking Action

During this phase, you should act to create your product or outcome. Keep in mind that the product will be evaluated based on the criteria that you established during the planning and investigation stages; your investigation and planning should inform the steps you take to complete the project. When your product is complete, you will report the project in a written paper.

You should  . . .

  • create a product/outcome in response to the goal, global context and criteria

  • demonstrate thinking skills

  • demonstrate communication and social skills

Reflection

During this phase, you need to reflect on how successfully the product met your criteria for success, how the project helped you better understand your topic and its global context, and how the project helped you develop as an IB learner. You will communicate this reflection in your process journal and in your final report.

You should . . .

  • evaluate the quality of the product/outcome against the specific criteria you developed in the planning stage

  • reflect on how completing the project has extended your knowledge and understandingof the topic and global context

  • reflect on your development as an IB learner through the project; use Approaches to Learning (ATLs) as a basis for reflection
