What are YOU going to DO?

STEP 1: Consider what you enjoy doing.  It might be researching your family history, photography, playing basketball, the performing arts, the plight of the people in Tanzania, playing video games, caring for the environment, the health issues that come with smoking, addressing community or global issues, cooking, hiking, fishing, falconry, fashion, reading, writing, inventing, conducting science experiments, serving your community, or any other topic that YOU find personally interesting.

 

Step 2: Now look at your topic through the different lenses of each of the 6 global contexts. How could the way you look at your topic be influenced by these different perspectives? 

For example,

What would your inquiry question be if you looked at the topic of fashion through the global context of 'Orientation in Time & Space'?

What would your inquiry question be if you looked at the topic of fishing through the global context of 'Scientific & Technical Inovation'?

What would your inquiry question be if you looked at the topic of photography through the global context of 'Globalization & Sustainability'?
 

STEP 3: Once you decide on a topic & a global context, you need to determine a tangible product or measurable outcome that might result from your investigation of this topic. You want a product/outcome that is challenging, or highly challenging, but not impossible to accomplish. Be a realistic risk-taker! 

Here are a just some of the products/outcomes that have been produced by Grade 10 students around the world over the last few years:

 

  • The Biomechanics of the 3-point Shot?

  • An electric guitar built from scratch, including a live performance

  • Investigation into benefits of Hydro-ponic farming; this investigation led to the creation of a Hydro-ponic garden.

  • Research on how to construct a fly-fishing rod; construction of the rod with supporting video documentation and a live demonstration for middle school students.

  • Researching dog training techniques; working with a local shelter to provide obedience classes to a shelter dog with the goal of making the dog more adoptable

  • Creation of a video game after studying computer programming.

 

STEP 4: Complete a personal project proposal in Managebac. You need to record the following:

  • TOPIC: Identify your topic of interest and explain why you chose this topic. 

  • GLOBAL CONTEXT: Choose a global context relevant to your topic and goal. See this website's page on Global Contexts for help or look at the relevant in the MYP Personal Project Guide. 

  • INQUIRY QUESTIONS: Write an inquiry question that will guide your investigation, planning, and action. It should be relevant to your topic, goal, and global context.

  • GOAL:  Define what you want to accomplish. State your goal, including the product or outcome.

  • SUCCESS CRITERIA: Develop the criteria that your final product/outcome will be measured against. These should be specifications that the product/outcome must meet to be considered a success. Your research must inform these specifications. You might make a checklist or rubric. 

 

 For example, a student's goal is to show the importance of bamboo in Vietnamese life and plans to produce a painting.             Specifications might include the following:

 

  • The painting will includes images of how bamboo is used in daily life

  • The medium will be acrylic on canvas

  • The style will be observational

  • The painting will consist of mixed media and realism - bamboo products attached to the canvas

  • The painting will be on a canvas 1m x 1m

 

The personal project proposal on ManageBac must be completed and submitted for approval by 28th May before you begin working to complete your product or outcome. Supervisors will approve projects before the Summer Holidays.

How do you know where you are going if you haven't chosen a destination and mapped out your route? 

Avoid becoming lost or wandering aimlessly; spend time planning exactly what you will accomplish through your personal project.
